From September 2, 2025, the U.S. Department of State will begin applying updated rules that require most nonimmigrant visa applicants, including those under 14 years old and over 79, to appear for an in-person visa interview.
This change applies to visa applicants in all countries, including the UAE, and ends several of the COVID-era interview waiver policies that allowed many travelers to skip the interview process.
According to the official announcement, interview exemptions will only remain in place for:
- Holders of diplomatic or official visas (A, G, NATO categories)
- Applicants renewing a valid B1/B2 visa or Border Crossing Card within 12 months of expiration, under strict conditions
To be eligible for the B1/B2 renewal waiver, applicants must:
- Submit their application from their country of residence or nationality
- Have no previous visa refusal (unless resolved)
- Not show any possible visa ineligibility
U.S. consular officers also retain the authority to require an in-person interview at their discretion, even for eligible cases.
This latest update replaces the February 18, 2025 guidance and reflects a return to pre-pandemic visa processing norms focused on stronger applicant screening.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the official website of their local U.S. Embassy or Consulate for the latest information on appointment availability, document requirements, and interview guidelines.
In the UAE, visa interviews are conducted at the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate in Dubai. Due to high demand, applicants should prepare early to avoid delays.
