A transit visa is a document that allows you to stay in a country where you land on your way to another destination. It legalizes your short stay, allowing you to wait for your next flight. You can choose whether to leave the airport premises or not, but you do require a transit visa during a layover in the UAE.

When do you need a transit UAE Visa?

  • Your layover in the UAE is more than 8 hours.
  • You plan to leave the airport during your layover.
  • Your stay is between 8 to 96 hours (transit visas are usually for 48 or 96 hours).
  • You’re transiting through two different UAE airports (e.g., Abu Dhabi to Dubai).
  • You’re not eligible for visa-free entry or visa on arrival in the UAE.

    Steps to Get a Dubai Transit Visa

    1 Check Your Eligibility

    See if your flight has a layover in Dubai and whether you’re eligible for visa on arrival or visa exception. If not, you will need to apply for this visa.

    2 Choose the Visa Type (48 or 96 Hours)

    Depending on your timing of flights, you can choose between the two choices. One offers 48 hours of stay while the other offers 96. Both are non-extendable.

    3 Contact Your Airline or Travel Agent

    Only an airline can provide you with a transit visa. Travel agencies can also help you get it through the airlines. Choose your source and initiate the process through it.

    4 Submit the Visa Application

    Submit the application along with the required information and documents. Ensure that the documents are correct and valid. A mistake in this step can cause delays or even rejection.

    5 Pay the Applicable Fee (if any)

    The transit visa for 48 hours is completely free, while the 96-hour visa requires a small fee. Submit the fee if you’re applying for the latter.

    6 Receive Your Transit Visa

    Once the authorities have reviewed your application, they will send your e-visa through email. This usually takes 2 – 5 business days.

    7 Print and Carry Your Visa

    Print the visa and carry it with you throughout your journey, especially during your layover in Dubai, UAE.
