UAE Enforces Fines for Visa Overstays: Key Guidelines for Visitors and Residents

February 3, 2025by Muhammad Muneeb

The UAE has implemented fines for individuals who overstay their visas or fail to adjust their status after visa expiry or cancellation. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has outlined strict regulations to ensure compliance.

Visa Validity and Extensions

Issued visas are valid for 60 days from the date of issuance before entry into the UAE. During their stay, visa holders can request extensions within specified periods.
New visas for friends or relatives can be applied through the ICP’s digital platforms. Steps include logging into UAE Pass, selecting the visa type, specifying the duration, and submitting the required details. Once processed, the entry permit is sent via email.

Overstay Fines and Grace Periods

Overstaying fees are standardized at AED 50 per day for all visa types.
Residents get a grace period ranging from one month to six months based on their visa category. Once a residence visa expires, the Emirates ID also becomes invalid.

Visa Cancellation Procedures

Individuals leaving the UAE permanently must ensure their residence visas and dependents’ visas are canceled.
Only the sponsor or an authorized representative can process the cancellation. For employment visas, companies must first cancel the labor contract and work permit via MOHRE before submitting a visa cancellation request to the ICP.
For family residence visas, the sponsor must cancel dependents’ visas before canceling their own.

Checking and Paying Overstay Fines

Individuals can check and pay their overstay fines through various channels:
GDRFA Website: Visit the Fines Inquiry Service to check fines on your file or those under your sponsorship.
ICP Website: Access the ICP’s official website to inquire about and settle fines.
Authorized Typing Centers: Visit authorized typing centers accredited by the ICP to process fine payments.
Amer Centers: In Dubai, Amer centers process immigration applications and fine payments on behalf of the GDRFA.
